Orchidaceae Earrings

Piece Description

Title:

Orchidaceae Earrings

Materials:

Solid sterling silver, freshwater pearl.

Techniques used:

Forming, sweat soldering, forging, chasing and repousse.

Piece features:

These orchid earrings consist of three layers: The sepal, the petal and the lip with throat and tendrils. All parts were fabricated and formed separately and then sweat soldered together. Starting with a sheet of sterling silver, I sawed out the shapes and then through a variety of hammering techniques I was able to mimic a true treasure from nature. I chose to finish the duo with simple wire loops and set a large freshwater pearl in the throat of the orchid.

Enchanted Forest Ring

Piece Description

Title:

Enchanted Forest Ring

Materials:

Brass, bronze, quartz, red agate, sterling silver, copper.

Techniques used:

Reduction gilding. Soldering. Forging.

Piece features:

This ring is actually two rings that can be worn or enjoyed four different ways as seen in the various views. Its centerpiece is a sterling silver bezel set rich red agate cabochon. The frosty aesthetics was accomplished by pulverizing crystal quartz with a hammer and strategically bonding it with the piece.

Inspiration:

This ring was inspired by a frosty forest floor. One laden with decaying leaves adorned by a crystalline frost with sprouting flora breaching through.

Piece Description

Title:

Ontogeny Corsage

Materials:

Bronze, citrine, topaz, sterling silver.

Techniques used:

Forming, sweat soldering, forging, chasing and repousse.

Piece features:

The overall aesthetic of this piece was achieved by twisting a few, very thick bronze and sterling silver wire together and then soldering them to each other. After that, I dapped the now fused wires in the center until they started forming together. Then I added a few more wires and repeated this process several times. After all the desired wire was added, I hammered the middle of the piece little by little forming it until the desired shape came about, fusing the wire together to make one solid and smooth object. This produced a beautiful swirl of a rosy bronze and sterling silver. After that I balled the ends of the wire, polished them, and then set stones at their tips. The leaves on this piece are sweat soldered sterling silver and bronze that I chased to achieve the natural look.

Inspiration:

The idea of this piece was inspired, like so many other of my pieces, of the way plants grow. I wanted to capture the beauty of something growing and its stages. Like the upward twisting of an old tree or the spiraling of ivy as it reaches for the sun.  I wanted to unite the wearer with something from nature.
